Coatings QA/QC & Documentation

Coatings QA/QC & Documentation

At Shane Coatings Services™, coatings QA/QC documentation is focused on the coating system, the substrate, the specification, and the finished work product. While safety planning protects the workforce, work area, property, and surrounding environment, QA/QC documentation helps verify that the selected coating system is being installed under conditions that support long-term performance.

Shane Coatings Services™ supports infrastructure, industrial, commercial, residential, and specialty coatings projects with coatings-focused quality control practices, documentation support, inspection awareness, and project-specific reporting. Our QA/QC approach helps clients, owners, engineers, general contractors, manufacturers, and facility teams better understand what was prepared, what was applied, how it was applied, and how key project conditions were documented.

Quality Control for the Coating System & Finished Work Product

Coatings performance depends on more than the material selected. Proper surface preparation, substrate cleanliness, environmental conditions, product handling, mixing, application timing, coating thickness, cure, and documentation all influence the final result.

Shane Coatings Services™ supports QA/QC documentation related to:

  • Substrate condition review
  • Surface preparation requirements
  • Surface cleanliness and profile awareness
  • Environmental condition monitoring
  • Product data, safety data, and coating system review
  • Batch numbers and material traceability
  • Mixing, induction time, pot life, and recoat window awareness
  • Wet film thickness and dry film thickness checks where required
  • Application controls and inspection checkpoints
  • Photo documentation and project reporting
  • Final coating system documentation and closeout support

Specified Systems, Manufacturer Requirements & Custom Coatings Support

Shane Coatings Services™ installs owner-specified, engineer-specified, and manufacturer-specified coating systems from leading protective and industrial coatings manufacturers, including Sherwin-Williams Protective & Marine, PPG Protective & Marine Coatings, Carboline, Tnemec, International Protective Coatings / AkzoNobel, and other approved coating system manufacturers.

When a coating system has already been selected, our QA/QC documentation process helps support the requirements of that specified system. When project conditions require additional review, specialty support, or a custom-developed coatings approach, Shane Coatings Services™ can also coordinate with the broader Shane Coatings platform for product-system awareness, custom product manufacturing resources, and project-focused coatings support.

Surface Preparation & Environmental Conditions

Many coating failures begin before the coating is ever applied. Surface preparation that is incomplete, contaminated, rushed, or performed outside the project requirements can affect adhesion, service life, and long-term performance.

Environmental conditions can also affect coating performance. Temperature, humidity, dew point, surface temperature, ventilation, dust, contamination, moisture, and cure conditions may all need to be monitored depending on the coating system, specification, manufacturer requirements, and project environment.

Shane Coatings Services™ supports documentation and project controls related to:

  • Surface preparation method and standard awareness
  • Surface profile and cleanliness considerations
  • Dust, debris, and contamination controls
  • Ambient temperature, surface temperature, humidity, and dew point awareness
  • Ventilation, containment, and controlled work-area considerations
  • Manufacturer and specification requirements for application conditions

Material Traceability & Application Documentation

On regulated, infrastructure, industrial, and specialty coatings projects, material traceability and application records may be required as part of the project submittal, inspection, or closeout process.

Depending on the project requirements, Shane Coatings Services™ can support documentation related to:

  • Product Data Sheets and Safety Data Sheets
  • Manufacturer coating system information
  • Material batch numbers and lot numbers
  • Mix ratios, induction times, pot life, and recoat windows
  • Application method and coating sequence
  • Wet film thickness and dry film thickness records where required
  • Inspection hold points and project-specific checkpoints
  • Daily reports, photo logs, and field documentation
  • Final documentation packages where required by the owner, engineer, manufacturer, or specification

AMPP / NACE Inspection Support

Shane Coatings Services™ maintains in-house AMPP/NACE coatings inspection capability, including AMPP/NACE Level II support where applicable. This helps support coating-related documentation, inspection awareness, surface preparation review, coating application checks, and communication with owners, engineers, manufacturers, and project teams.

Where an owner, engineer, specification, or conflict-of-interest requirement calls for independent review, Shane Coatings Services™ can also coordinate independent third-party NACE Level III coating inspection support.

Regulated Project QA/QC Submittals

For regulated infrastructure, industrial, utility, mining, marine, government, manufacturing, and specialty coatings projects, QA/QC documentation is often confirmed through the project submittal and closeout process.

Depending on the project, submittals and closeout documents may include:

  • Coating system data and manufacturer documentation
  • Surface preparation procedures and requirements
  • Inspection forms and coating application records
  • Environmental monitoring logs
  • Material traceability records
  • WFT / DFT readings where required
  • Calibration records for inspection equipment where required
  • Photo documentation and daily reports
  • Nonconformance, corrective action, or punch-list documentation where applicable
  • Owner, engineer, agency, manufacturer, or specification-required closeout documents

Safety-Led Work, Product-Focused Documentation

Shane Coatings Services™ begins with safety. Worker safety, hazard recognition, site controls, containment, access planning, material handling, and environmental awareness help create a more controlled project environment.

From that safety-led foundation, coatings QA/QC documentation focuses on the product and finished work: the substrate, the surface preparation, the coating materials, the environmental conditions, the application controls, the inspection checks, and the final coating system.
